I am Dr Anne Marie Rattray, the force behind The Smart Work Company Ltd. My early experience of cataclysmic industrial collapse in my home town in the West of Scotland has shaped who I am, and what I do.
Two fundamental beliefs drive me. One is that many businesses waste the capabilities of people who work in them.
This quote from the then trade unionist Jimmy Reid, addressing students at Glasgow University in 1972, quote inspires me and keeps me going:
“To unleash the latent potential of our people requires that we give them responsibility. The untapped resources of the North Sea are as nothing compared to the untapped resources of our people.”
The second belief is that we all need to start taking personal responsibility for developing our skills, capabilities and latent potential. Change is constant. We need to be prepared.
I’m excited by current technological developments that underpin new industries, skills and possibilities. Social technologies connect us to a global network of people that we can learn with and from.
I’ve had some successes and lots of failures. I never give up.
p.s. I need a new picture. This one was taken in 2015, while speaking at an event at CISCO’s premises in Paris.
