Most managers I know, myself included, were thrown in at the deep end into their first management position. Some learned very quickly about human behaviour, relying on their instincts. A lot is known about management systems and practices that are associated with satisfying work and business benefits. Despite much talk about 21st century organisations, we can prevent a great deal of wheel-reinventing by building on what we know.
